Supermarkets and fast food chains need to stand against forest and bushland destruction

Australia is a global deforestation hotspot—and most of this happens in Queensland. Deforestation of forests and bushlands is killing tens of millions of native animals each year, like the koala, causing significant carbon pollution, and polluting and putting further stress on the Great Barrier Reef.

Between 2014 and 2019, over one million hectares of forest and bushland was bulldozed in Queensland for beef. Shockingly, in the year 2019-2020, 418,656 hectares of forest and bushland was bulldozed in Queensland.

Based on previous analyses, almost three quarters of the destruction in Queensland was to make way for beef production—huge swaths of native bushland that wildlife depends on is being torn down so there’s more pasture for cattle.

The biggest Australian buyers of beef are the supermarkets and fast food giants. These companies could, and as good corporate citizens should, only source and sell beef that is not linked to deforestation.

Currently, none of these companies can guarantee that the beef they’re sourcing and selling is deforestation-free.

Companies are saying that they’re not hearing from the general public about deforestation and land clearing. Together, we can change that.

Will you add your name to the Wilderness Society’s petition telling Australia’s biggest beef buyers—supermarkets and major fast food chains—that you expect the products they sell to be free of deforestation?

Be deforestation-free!

Add your name to the Wilderness Society’s petition to Australia’s big supermarkets & fast food chains asking them to eliminate deforestation from their beef products.

The majority of deforestation and land clearing within Australia is for beef production.

Deforestation of forests and bushlands is killing tens of millions of native animals each year, like the koala, causing significant carbon pollution, and putting further stress on the waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

Australia’s biggest beef buyers—supermarkets and fast food giants—have a responsibility to all Australians to help stop this destruction. All Australian beef sourced and sold by these big buyers should have no links to deforestation.

We call on the big supermarkets and fast food chains in Australia commit to being deforestation-free. Companies need to develop a verified implementation plan throughout their whole supply chain. This must ensure their definitions are fit for Australia's unique ecosystems and their data and traceability is robust.
