Tell the Treasurer to properly fund nature protection

The government has failed to protect the environment and endangered species from destructive projects for too long. The government now recognises this and is reforming Australia’s main environmental law. Together, we can build pressure to push the Albanese government to act NOW to stop the destruction and protect endangered species.

The government has failed to protect the environment and endangered species from destructive projects for too long. The government now recognises this and is reforming Australia’s main environmental law. Together, we can build pressure to push the Albanese government to act NOW to stop the destruction and protect endangered species.

One important piece of the puzzle is funding. And a new Federal Budget is around the corner. That budget is a key opportunity to start properly funding nature protection.

But the government hasn’t yet put its money where its mouth is. Federal funding for the environment has stagnated for two decades despite massive economic growth and increases in government spending on many other portfolio areas.

Please help to put funding for nature protection on the political agenda and hold the government accountable for funding shortfalls. The most powerful way you and thousands of others can keep the pressure on is by emailing Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Minister for Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek today to get serious about funding nature protection.

If you’d like to personalise your email, you could mention that:

  • You can’t solve climate change without also solving the biodiversity crisis

  • Australia currently spends way more on fossil fuel subsidies than it does on environmental protection

  • Minister Plibersek committed to no new extinctions in October 2022. But the budget allocated to that action plan was around 10% of what scientists have said is needed.
