Please Minister Sussan Ley: Don’t Approve Lake Malbena Proposal! Again!

Tasmania’s government has privatised an entire World Heritage island, inside the Walls of Jerusalem National Park—itself inside Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area. This is solely for the financial benefit of a private tourism company called Wild Drake.

With the support of thousands of people, the Wilderness Society lodged and won a Federal Court case against the Federal Government. The Court overturned the Government’s decision not to regulate Wild Drake’s helicopter-accessed tourism development.

Now Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley could approve the project all over again. Please write to her today and tell her that this project should not be approved—World Heritage is meant for everyone to enjoy—not private companies to the exclusion of everyone else.

  • There is substantial new evidence that has been provided by the Wilderness Society to you which objectively demonstrates that the Wild Drake helicopter-accessed tourist proposal:

    • will significantly impact the wilderness values within the TWWHA

    • is not consistent with the TWWHA Management Plan 2016; and

    • is therefore clearly unacceptable.

  • In 2018, the World Heritage Committee urged Australia to prepare a draft Tourism Master Plan for the TWWHA in line with the primary goal of protecting its Outstanding Universal Value and submit the Plan to the Committee before finalisation. Any Tourism Master Plan should clearly indicate commercial infrastructure and developments should be kept outside of the TWWHA boundaries. Until such a Plan has been finalised and approved by the Committee, it is clearly inappropriate for either the Australian or Tasmanian Governments to consider approving such developments within the TWWHA.

  • Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area is internationally recognised as an important refuge for many threatened flora and fauna, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Given the worsening climate and extinction crises, now is not the time for you to place more pressure on this precious area by allowing inappropriate developments, like the Lake Malbena proposal, to proceed.
