Protect our species from extinction

We have a new Environment Minister Sussan Ley, and together we have a huge opportunity to get her to do something about Australia’s extinction crisis.

We have a new Environment Minister Sussan Ley, and together we have a huge opportunity to get her to do something about Australia’s extinction crisis.

In October our out-dated and failing national environment law—the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Protection Act (EPBC Act)—is up for review.

There is a real risk that big corporations will try and hijack it—they are already in the news, calling for the laws to be watered down further, while spinning it as ‘cutting green tape’.

This is a once-in-a-generation chance to do something about Australia’s extinction crisis, to end deforestation and to get better protections in place for our unique animals and ecosystems.

Through this review, the Government has a choice: will they act to end Australia’s extinction crisis or will they continue to back the broken system that is failing our wildlife and our communities?

Let Minister Ley know that the Australian Government needs a plan to fix Australia’s extinction crisis that includes nature laws that end the threats to our wildlife and forests and an independent watchdog to enforce them.

It is good to personalise these emails, you could also mention:

  • Australia is a world leader in extinction and experts say the rate will increase over the next 20 years.

  • Recovery plans for species are unfunded and unimplemented, our weak national environment laws aren’t enforced and don’t stop the major threats to our most vulnerable species.

  • Some industries, like logging, are even exempt from current national laws.

  • Extinction is avoidable. We are a wealthy country, we have both the ecological knowledge & the resources to respond.

  • With the right laws in place, Australia could respond to this crisis, we are resourceful and could find solutions.

  • The recent 4Corners report on ABC has shown the urgency of the extinction problem.
