In March, The Victorian Government extended dodgy logging deals—called ‘Regional Forest Agreements’— for two years. Since 1997, these deals have destroyed 20,000ha of Victoria’s old growth forests and killed endangered wildlife.

But there is a ray of hope…  the Victorian Government has committed to ‘reassess’ these deals.

The pressure is working, but we need to make sure the Government’s assessment is strong, that endangered wildlife habitat is immediately protected, and that new protected areas are created urgently.

You might want to mention the following:

  • A rigorous and independent re-assessment of the full range of forest values and benefits is important, and essential.

  • A modernised Regional Forest Agreement must be based on credible science and reflect community values.

  • A moratorium must be placed on logging in forests in the critically endangered Mountain Ash forests of the Central Highlands, the only home of the critically endangered Leadbeater’s Possum, while the reassessment is undertaken.

  • Protecting parts of the Kuark Forest is very welcome—but many more areas need protection.

  • Handing over responsibility for surveying for threatened species to the Environment Department may be a good move—but the Government must ensure laws for species protection are enforced, and certainly not let loggers off the hook for logging animals’ habitats to extinction.

  • The Government needs to get on with creating the Great Forest National Park (Central Highlands) and the Emerald Link (East Gippsland).
