Protect the Pilliga — Ban CSG from NSW!

Protect the Pilliga — Ban CSG from NSW!

Coal seam gas giant, Santos, wants to punch 850, one-kilometre-deep holes through the Great Artesian Basin. The project will rip scars in the spectacular Pilliga forest. It threatens water, climate, native wildlife and human health.

Right now, the proposal is moving steadily through the NSW assessment system and a green light for this environmental disaster is a present threat. The NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, needs to listen to the people of Australia who do not want this unnecessary risk to our future.

Sign the petition asking the Premier to reject Santos’ destructive project and ban dangerous CSG from NSW for good.

Reject the Narrabri Gas Project in the Pilliga forest

Approval for the giant Narrabri Gasfield in the Pilliga forest is looming. Email NSW Premier Berejiklian, to demonstrate that the people of NSW, and across Australia, do not want risky coal seam gas.

Dear Premier Berejiklian,

Cc: Planning Minister Rob Stokes

Across NSW, local communities have spoken out against unconventional gas, like coal seam gas, and many communities have successfully protected themselves from its threat.

Around the world, reviews of the scientific literature find hundreds of papers regarding the health hazards, water contamination and air pollution from this industry. Following an examination of the evidence, Victoria has joined a growing list of jurisdictions (including France, Spain, Scotland and New York State) that have banned unconventional gas—because, as Victorian Premier Andrews said, the 'health and environmental risks involved outweigh any potential benefits'.

We call on you to protect the water, land and health of the people of NSW from unconventional gas by:

- Protecting the Pilliga forest—a critical recharge zone for the Great Artesian Basin and a biodiversity hotspot—from Santos’ 850 well Narrabri Gas Project. This is the last active coal seam gasfield proposal left in NSW.

- Legislating for a permanent ban on this risky industry right across the state.

Coal seam gas is expensive and will not drive down gas prices for the people of NSW. In fact, the people of NSW are paying more for their gas due to competing on the global market for our own resources. We do not need or want this industry and its unacceptable risks and impacts.

Please keep me informed of your progress on this matter.

Regards,
