Say no to mindless new gas drilling in Victoria & Lutruwita / Tasmania's oceans

While Australia faces escalating climate and nature crises, the Albanese Labor government is opening vast new areas of ocean off Victoria and Lutruwita / Tasmania for oil and gas exploration.

Mindless new oil and gas threatens precious marine environments, Lutruwita / Tasmania’s World-Heritage coastline, and beloved surf beaches.

The Australian government has a short consultation period on this new proposal to open this area as a new frontier for seismic blasting and gas drilling. The Wilderness Society will be making a submission.

Add your name to protect oceans, coasts, communities and the climate from new oil and gas. You’ll be joining a long list of Australians fighting to protect these wild oceans that are home to whales, seals, dolphins, seabirds, seaweeds, sponges, crustaceans and many other globally unique species.

Add your name

By adding your name to our submission, you will help increase our impact and show the Albanese Labor government that the community wants real climate action and marine protection, not new oil and gas.

Mindless new acreage release is a climate, nature and community disaster and must not proceed.

Add your name to the Wilderness Society’s submission calling on the Australian government to:

  • Halt the expansion of the oil and gas industry in Australia’s oceans. The climate crisis is already increasing global temperatures, fuelling catastrophic extreme weather events and driving more species to the brink of extinction. Australia must transition away from fossil fuels, not open the door to brand new oil and gas.

  • Protect the ecologically significant marine environment and sea life of the Otway ocean region. This region is a global biodiversity hotspot, home to more than 40 threatened species, including the endangered pygmy blue whale, seals and penguins.

  • Safeguard Lutruwita’s / Tasmania’s World Heritage coastline. This wild coastline is recognised globally for its environmental and cultural significance.

  • Listen to the voices of First Nations people and local communities in Victoria, King Island and Lutruwita / Tasmania who have consistently opposed new oil and gas in this region and the exploitation of Sea Country.
