Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to ask for your support and urgent action to prevent the release of new frontier oil and gas acreage off the coasts of Victoria and Lutruwita / Tasmania and to formally end the current federal government process for release of offshore oil and gas acreage.

New gas is a climate disaster. New gas next to Lutruwita / Tasmania’s World heritage coastline is a double disaster.

The acreage released on 11 December 2025 is a giant new frontier for oil and gas in Australia's southern oceans. It resurrects the threat of new seismic blasting and drilling in a region where communities have fought hard, and successfully, to see off the industry over many years.

Expansion of the industry into this region puts 42 threatened species at risk. These wild oceans are home to whales, seals, dolphins, seabirds, seaweeds, sponges, crustaceans and many other globally unique species.

This region is wholly unsuitable for gas exploration. It includes  geologically unstable deep-water submarine canyon systems, where gas drilling is high risk and a spill would be catastrophic. A spill could decimate the iconic Great Ocean Road and Lutruwita / Tasmania’s globally recognised World Heritage coastline.

Opening up new areas of ocean for oil and gas exploration is at odds with the urgent need to address the twin nature and climate crises, and represents a clear backward step for climate action and marine protection.

Continuing to hand over huge areas of Australian oceans for oil and gas exploration is unnecessary and irresponsible. I am extremely disappointed that your government is even considering, let alone proposing to release new frontier exploration permits in 2025.

Ending the release of new offshore acreage is one of the most obvious and logical steps required to support a transition to renewables and away from destructive and risky fossil fuels.

I want a government that listens to the concerns of local communities and takes action to protect the marine environment and prevent worsening climate change.

I call on you and your government to urgently and permanently cease the acreage release process and put an end to mindless fossil fuel expansion in Australia’s unique and spectacular oceans.
