But now, recent reports coming out of the industry suggest this mindless release process may have stalled.

The rumour mill is spinning and oil and gas companies are no doubt lobbying to get this insanity up and running again.

But the community knows that it is high time for the mindless release to end, especially in the midst of climate and biodiversity crises. That’s why it is so important that the government hears from you now.

I am writing to ask for your support and urgent action to formally end the current federal government process for the annual release of offshore oil and gas acreage.

There are significant issues with the current process, not least of all that opening up new acreage for oil and gas exploration is inconsistent with the International Energy Agency’s roadmap to net-zero emissions by 2050.

Continuing to hand over huge areas of our oceans for oil and gas exploration to the petroleum industry every year is unnecessary and irresponsible. It limits our ability to properly protect our oceans both today and into the future.

Ending the release of new offshore acreage is one of the most obvious and logical steps required to support a transition to renewables and away from destructive and risky fossil fuel expansion. And it is possible to do.

For me, this is an important issue for our climate, our marine environments and Australia’s coastal communities.a I strongly encourage you to urgently remove this mindless release from government policy and the legislation that enables it.
