Make Lonnavale Forests a Swift Parrot Important Breeding Area

The critically-endangered Swift Parrot needs your help. Its habitat is being logged every day, which is driving its extinction. The Lonnavale Forests in southern lutruwita / Tasmania are rich and critical habitat for the species. These forests, across Denison, Barnback and Russell valleys, are currently outside the “Swift Parrot Important Breeding Area”. This means there are few restrictions that prevent the logging of this High Conservation Value forest habitat.

Swift Parrot scientists have recommended the Lonnavale Forests be better protected from logging.

Please add your name to call on lutruwita / Tasmania’s Forestry Minister Guy Barnett to declare the Lonnavale Forests a “Swift Parrot Important Breeding Area”. This will mean that Swift Parrot habitat within the Lonnavale Forests will be better protected.

Act Swiftly

Please add your name to call on the Tasmanian government to immediately enforce a moratorium on logging of Swift Parrot habitat. Right now 25 areas throughout the Lonnavale Forests—a total of 890ha—are due to be logged in the next three years. We need to act swiftly.

I call on you—the Tasmanian government—to immediately enforce a moratorium on logging of Swift Parrot habitat and a concurrent reduction in Forestry Tasmania's wood production quota until an adequate policy to ensure the long-term survival of the species is implemented under legislation. We need the policy to be approved by Swift Parrot specialists and properly enforced.

This includes, but is not limited to, extending the Swift Parrot Important Breeding Area to include the Lonnavale Forests, which is the Denison, Barnback and Russell River areas.

I look forward to welcoming your announcement to this effect and please, act swiftly.
