Dear Minister Plibersek,

Thank you for putting environmental law reform at the top of your agenda. Australia’s national nature laws have been sending this continent’s unique nature and important ecosystems backwards for far too long, so this issue is also very important to me.

I very much want you to implement reforms that can restore the community’s trust in Australia’s national nature laws. To do that, I believe that the new laws for nature must:

1. Be effective. The priority must be turning around the environmental decline already occurring. They need to actually change the status quo—stop the ongoing destruction of threatened species’ habitat on land and sea Country.
2. Be fair. They need to apply across all sectors—no industry should be given a free pass in an attempt to profit from species extinction and environmental decline.
3. Have integrity. The community must have a meaningful say in environmental decisions that affect them—unlawful or incorrect decisions should be able to be challenged by the community.
4. Be forward-looking. Nature needs help to thrive in the future—it needs serious funding and real recovery planning to ensure the iconic natural and cultural values of this continent are here for future generations.

I hope that this important opportunity for reform will properly protect Australia’s amazing nature for generations to come.
