Dear Commissioner Sinkevičius, 
I am writing to you from Australia, where we have world-class forests and bushlands that support unique biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth.

But Australia is in the midst of a deforestation crisis. Our weak laws mean these unique forests are still being bulldozed for the production of beef, timber, pulp and paper and aluminium, much of which is destined for export.

I applaud your leadership in developing the EU Deforestation Regulation. I am excited that it has the potential to help end Australia’s deforestation crisis and encourage deforestation-free industries to prosper here. But for that to happen, the EU needs to be clear that it won’t any longer accept products from Australia that destroy forests.

As EU Commissioner for Environment, I am asking you to:
- Recognise Australia’s deforestation crisis.
- List Australia as a high-risk country of origin for deforestation under the EUDR country benchmarking list, at least until the deforestation crisis is halted.
- Close all loopholes, including around finance and agricultural exemptions, so the EU’s new deforestation law actually helps protect Australia’s globally-significant, biodiverse forests by ensuring only deforestation-free products are imported from Australia to the EU.
