Firstly, thank you for your efforts on the illegal clearing that had occurred at Yakka Munga Pastoral Lease. Hearing about the destructive clearing that happened in this beautiful part of the world made my heart sink and drove me to contact you.

The anguish seen on the faces of the Traditional Custodians in that area, due to the perceived injustice of deforestation without an appropriate given permit, showed how important Country is in the Kimberley and must remain well looked after—for us all.

Due to the decision of the Pastoral Lands Board, who have ordered the leaseholder to revegetate the cleared land, I urge you, as the representative for our Environmental Health in Western Australia, to authorise the strongest possible sanctions against Shanghai Zenith under your power through the Environment Protection Act.

You have said yourself that a fine of $1 million is possible against a corporate body. This must be laid down as a marker to this group that no more clearing beyond what they are permitted to do can occur.

It is also essential that the revegetation order is fully implemented and checked thoroughly by the Government to restore the health of this pristine area.

Your actions will resonate, Minister, and indicate how the McGowan Government views flagrant environmental destruction under your stewardship. Be the Minister which protects the Kimberley, not the Minister which allowed big business to run roughshod over this last great area of Australia’s wilderness.
