Stop oil and gas on Channel Country rivers & floodplains

When Lake Eyre fills, it is a globally significant wildlife wonder in central Australia. It attracts several million breeding birds!

The Channel Country rivers in South West Queensland are the lifeblood of Lake Eyre. Isolated waterholes and artesian springs provide permanent refuges for an incredible array of specially adapted and highly vulnerable aquatic species during dry periods—some of which are only found in a single spring complex.

But when a big wet comes through, these systems burst into life, rejuvenating the land and channelling that all important water into Lake Eyre.

But these Channel Country rivers and floodplains are in the firing line of big oil and gas companies. There’s a concerted push to frack these lands for unconventional gas. This type of development would see the floodplains criss-crossed with infrastructure, disrupting the natural water flows into Lake Eyre and putting the permanent waterholes and artesian springs that unique and threatened species rely upon at risk.

Will you tell your local MP that these vulnerable systems must be properly protected?

Labor’s State Conference is coming up fast—on 4 June—where a motion will be presented to prohibit mining and gas, undertake broad, open and meaningful consultation with all stakeholders and pause petroleum and gas development on the floodplains until suitable protections are legislated. An email to your local MP today will highlight the need for strong protections for Channel Country.

If you’d like to personalise you could mention:

  • These river systems support several endangered fish species which depend on either the permanent waterholes or artesian springs, including the Cooper Creek catfish, the Red-finned blue eye and the Edgbaston goby.

  • The waterbird breeding events that occur when these waterways fill up are significant on both a national and international scale with several million waterbirds gathering to breed.

  • An independent report commissioned by the government identified that fossil fuel developments in this area were likely to reduce the pressure and quality of both groundwater and surface water.
