But despite almost four years in office, nobody knows what the Andrews Government will do to fix these problems. Premier Daniel Andrews must act decisively, and act now. Because the hard truth is: things have to change. In fact, they’re already changing.

Major retailers like Bunnings and Officeworks know things are changing, and are ahead of the government. They both require FSC certification on timber and paper supplied to them, by 2020.

This government was elected promising to help fix the problems plaguing the timber industry, and to protect forests and threatened species. Sign the petition to Daniel Andrews so he knows he has your support to act decisively, and act now, and protect Victoria’s forests.

I am emailing you, Premier Andrews, to act decisively, and act now, to protect forests and to fix the problems plaguing Victoria’s logging industry.

Change is inevitable—in fact it’s already happening.

Already only one in every ten logs is a sawlog—the rest goes to feed the Japanese-owned paper factory where these magnificent, endangered forests are pulped for paper.

Pulping endangered forests for paper does not belong in 21st century Australia, and you must end it.

You can do this by completing the industry’s transition out of native forests and into plantations.

You must support regional towns which want their forests protected, and not require their valuable tourist vistas to be smashed to feed your sawmill.

You must protect forests in the Great Forest National Park and the Emerald Link.

Some sawmills, major retailers and consumers are already very clear: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is part of the future. Every day you keep VicForests logging native forests is another day without FSC.

The crisis in our forests must end.

Premier, end the speculation—fuelled by government inaction and sensationalist media reports—by announcing you will secure the future of Victoria’s forests by protecting them, and that you will support the logging industry through inevitable change by completing the transition to plantations.

Your government must catch up up with the retailers, the consumers, the reality of the wood supply, the dire threat to endangered species before economic opportunities such as the Great Forest National Park are lost forever.
