The wood’s run out and the ecosystem that supports Melbourne is in collapse. Already, only one log in every ten pulled out of the forests in the Central Highlands is used for sawn timber. The rest goes to pulp to make paper. Last year the industry was in such crisis that the government chose to bail out a sawmill (but in doing so is destroying other regional towns that actually want their forests left intact).
But despite almost four years in office, nobody knows what the Andrews Government will do to fix these problems. Premier Daniel Andrews must act decisively, and act now. Because the hard truth is: things have to change. In fact, they’re already changing.
Major retailers like Bunnings and Officeworks know things are changing, and are ahead of the government. They both require FSC certification on timber and paper supplied to them, by 2020.
This government was elected promising to help fix the problems plaguing the timber industry, and to protect forests and threatened species. Sign the petition to Daniel Andrews so he knows he has your support to act decisively, and act now, and protect Victoria’s forests.
