The Federal government has recently been trying to recycle an old and damaging bill to weaken environmental protections and make it easier for developers to destroy habitat and special places. Under the guise of a review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act), the Commonwealth has been undertaking a concerted push to transfer their federal decision-making to the state governments.
The Queensland government has now stood up to say that’s not good enough. Minister Meaghan Scanlon has publicly said that the Commonwealth must:
Respond to all of the recommendations to come out of Graeme Samuel's review of the EPBC Act;
Finalise a suite of strengthened national environmental standards; and
Ensure the costs of environmental protection are not unreasonably shifted on to the states.
A powerful way to get further action out of a government is to acknowledge and thank them when they do the right thing.
