The South Australian government has opened up public consultation on their proposed amendments to the Southern Kangaroo Island Marine Park and Seal Bay Sanctuary Zone.

The proposed amendments include expanding the Seal Bay Sanctuary Zone to increase protection of critical breeding and foraging grounds—and this is great news!

Seal Bay is home to one of the biggest and most important colonies of the Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), now listed as an endangered species under national environment law. It has been identified by the Australian government as a priority place to concentrate conservation efforts.

Australian sea lion numbers have been in decline for several decades. It is estimated that fewer than 12,000 individuals still live across the southern Australian coastline, where they are endemic.

But with these new amendments, together we can help turn this tragic situation around. Please send an email to the Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate, Environment and Water Susan Close to say “YES! I wholeheartedly support the expansion of the sanctuary zone!”
