Recovery plans matter. They are the contracts between the government and the community to protect and recover the unique Australian species that are threatened with extinction. Australia is in the grip of a continental extinction crisis—with more than 1,900 species on the national threatened species list.
Right now the Morrison government wants to hear from you—kind of!—about their plans to renege on their duty to make recovery plans for 676 of this continent's unique threatened species. They're consulting with the community but you're definitely not alone if you haven't heard about it—they're not trying too hard.
It’s become all too apparent that the government hasn’t been doing their job to deliver (or fund, or implement) successful recovery plans for threatened species. Instead of fixing this problem, the government’s response is to just rip these important contracts up—or ensure they never need to bother making them at all.
This is the opposite of what we need. The government needs to uphold their part of the contract by:
Developing recovery plans for ecological communities and the threatened species that call them home
Ensuring recovery plans are done properly and are well-funded
Listening to their independent review of the national environment law by setting and enforcing national standards that will protect the species and places we love.
Will you send a message to the Department of Environment and the Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley that recovery plans matter—and work—to protect Australia’s species and ecological communities.
