In the last few months, we’ve again seen why weak laws and a lack of national leadership can be catastrophic as over a million fish died along the embattled Darling River. Neglected by politicians, sucked dry by vested interests, the Murray-Darling is one of the worst symptoms of our broken system of environmental protections.
Massive fish deaths, along with skyrocketing deforestation rates, the mass bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, and the ongoing extinction of ever more native species are man-made tragedies and they must end. Now.
In the lead up to the next Federal Election, we must seize every opportunity to pressure our politicians to stand up to vested interests and bring in nature laws that protect our wildlife, wetlands and rivers and an independent Environment Protection Agency and Commission with teeth to enforce those laws.
Tony Burke is showing he’s listening, with the recent announcement of funding for urban waterways across Australia. Now we need to make sure he hears from the community - that we expect new nature laws across the board.
Will you call Minister Burke on behalf of nature? Personal calls are important to politicians. You don’t even have to talk to someone at the office, you can leave a message.
We’ve set out some talking points that you can use to make your call, but feel free to talk briefly about why you think we need a new approach for nature.
Protecting your personal information is our priority. You can read our Privacy Policy and Collection Statement.
