On 26 March, Minister Manison announced a plan that would see “the Territory to be the easiest place to do business”.

First this involves a plan to fast track land clearing approvals on pastoral land. The changes will allow clearing up to 1,000 hectares with a six week approval turn around. But this is just the first change of many. Will you email Northern Territory Ministers asking them to not fast track land clearing approvals?

However, recent media and government announcements highlight the opportunity for industrial expansion while reducing oversight, scrutiny and responsibility from the Territory government.

In February 2021 the most comprehensive research was published evaluating the environmental state of play in Australia. Of the 19 Australian ecosystems which met the criteria to be classified as “collapsing”, three are ecosystems located in the Northern Territory. These include the largely intact tropical savannas where agricultural development is likely to be expanded in the coming decades if the trajectory continues.

In comparison to other jurisdictions, the NT already has some of the weakest regulations for land clearing. Historically, this has led to an increase in land clearing permits and a destruction of key habitats. Alarmingly, on 26 March Minister Manison announced a plan that would see “the Territory to be the easiest place to do business”.

Cutting so-called ‘red tape’, opening up areas for development and reducing clearing permit timeframes from six months to six weeks is short-sighted, and is likely to lead to little to no scrutiny from important state authorities and devastation for the environment.

The pathway to economic growth in the Northern Territory should not be at the expense of the environment.

That is why I am emailing you today to reverse your decision to fast track land clearing approvals and instead, review the Northern Territory’s environmental laws controlling land clearing in order to protect biodiversity and reduce emissions.
