Let’s stop the NSW dirty energy deal opening the Pilliga to CSG

The NSW and Federal Governments recently struck a dirty energy deal; it includes a commitment from NSW to "find" 70PJ of gas.

This is a figure mysteriously similar to the volume Santos says it will pump out of the 850 gas wells in the aquifers below the Pilliga Forest. This project will put at risk drought-affected farms and allow Santos to drain 37 billion litres of groundwater.

This announcement is shocking in the wake of our catastrophic summer of bushfires, and the loss of over 1 billion native animals and 6 million hectares of some of the most biodiverse forests in the world. How can our governments possibly want to put more bushland at risk?

Ninety seven percent of the local community say NO to Pilliga CSG—and tens of thousands of Australians have already voiced their concerns about this project with a record breaking 22,700 formal objections. Please write to the NSW Energy and Environment Minister Matt Kean to say no to opening up the Pilliga to unconventional gas mining.

A personilsed message will have more impact, here are a few suggestions:

  • The Pilliga forest is a unique life giving ecosystem rich in biodiversity

  • CSGextraction will pose a significant risk to threatened plants and animals who call it home, including the koala, squirrel glider, eastern pygmy possum, diamond firetail, hooded robin, migrant birds including swift parrot, rainbow bee eater.

  • The forest is a refuge for the only known population of the Pilliga mouse

  • Water is precious, especially when Australia is suffering through a crippling heartbreaking drought impacting vulnerable rural communities.

  •  The Pilliga feeds clean water into the Great Artesian Basin, the crucial life support system for much of inland Australia.

  • This is vital food producing land. Unconventional gas extraction will damage the future viability of rural life.

  • Farmers are the backbone of our country produce and food here. They depend on a healthy farmland  for their livelihoods and their children’s future.
