What’s the hold up?

The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act—Australia’s failed national environment law—is up for a once-in-a-decade review. A crucial independent report into how the EPBC is failing to protect the places we love was due to be released in June—while the report was handed to the Government at the end of June, the Government has not released it.

So what’s the hold up? That’s a bit unclear. That’s why your MP needs to hear from you today. Will you give them a call and say that you want to see the report and that you want strong, new nature laws that protect our wildlife and the places they call home.

Under the cover of COVID-19, Morrison has said he wants to work with the states to slash environmental protections and Labor have indicated that they are willing to do a deal with them to speed up the approval of major projects. This could mean destructive projects like a huge mine or mega-gas projects get rushed through without proper assessment, or that communities around the country don’t get a say over what happens in their backyard.

A fast decision isn’t the same as a good decision when it comes to tackling Australia’s extinction crisis. The future of Australia’s irreplaceable nature is a matter for all Australians—communities have a right to see and engage with the independent report into the ongoing failure of our environment laws before any decisions are made.
