The government failed this RAT test

Three years ago, Australia set a new world record: we officially recorded the first species to go extinct because of climate change. Despite repeated warnings from scientists that the Bramble Cay melomys was in grave danger of extinction, the government did not act—and now this little brown rat is gone forever.

Many of Australia’s unique and globally important species are under increasing pressure. Currently, over 1,890 plants, animals and ecosystems are on the national Threatened Species list. Deforestation, climate change and habitat destruction are all driving species to the brink.

Right now the government needs to hear from you. Together, we can tell the government that it needs to:

  • Make and implement plans to recover all of Australia’s threatened species
  • Protect species’ habitat by taking action on climate change
  • Create and enforce new laws that actually protect threatened species and their homes
  • Fund conservation action properly, so Australia doesn’t lose any more special species.

Write to Environment Minister Sussan Ley today telling her she must act to save Australia’s species.

Australia cannot continue to be one of the worst in the world for extinction and biodiversity loss—the government needs to act now. Extinction is preventable but please act fast so Australia doesn’t lose these unique species forever.

I want you to protect endangered wildlife and ecosystems, and make the decisions that are best for nature and communities.
