Australia’s forests and wildlife are disappearing before our eyes. Short-term governments have passed the buck on protecting nature and aren’t even enforcing the weak, ineffective laws we currently have.

After years of campaigning by the environment movement, the Australian Labor Party has included in the final draft of their National Platform a commitment to an independent advocate for the environment to make sure Australia’s environment laws can end threats like extinction and deforestation.

But not everyone in the party is convinced and both the independent advocate and strong new nature laws will be hotly debated at the ALP’s National Conference in mid-December.

Personalising your email always makes a difference! Remind them that:

  • Australia is facing an extinction, pollution and deforestation crisis

  • Our current environment laws are broken, and tinkering around the edges with minor reforms won’t fix the problem

  • National leadership is urgently needed if we are to protect the people, places and wildlife we love

  • The ALP should adopt the current environment laws wording in their National Platform at their National Conference in December

  • You need to lift the environment above politics and entrust decision-making to independent science-based institutions like the National Environment Commission
