Don’t open up Wollemi to coalfields

The Wollemi area is one of our planet's special places. It’s home of the ancient Wollemi Pine and part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. It holds the last of the intact river catchments surrounding Sydney sitting at the very top of the Hawkesbury, Hunter and Murray-Darling River systems.

But the NSW government have set their sights on the coal that sits in this irreplaceable landscape.

Right now, the NSW government are ‘consulting’ with the community about whether this area should be ‘released’ for coal mining. There are two areas up for consideration now, and six others to follow. The first two they are seeking feedback on are right up against the Wollemi National Park.

The process they are using to decide whether to open up a Wollemi coalfield or not is totally opaque. The government set up this process in response to previous corruption over coal leases that has seen two former Ministers convicted and facing jail. But even after this, the process doesn’t seem to be fixed properly.

The Wilderness Society is making a submission to this round of consultation—ending on 18 August. As part of that submission, we would like to include your name in a long list of Australians to powerfully demonstrate the widespread community opposition to the government, but also to any coal companies that might be considering these coalfields.

The last thing Australia should be doing right now is opening up new coalfields. To dig up and burn more coal right now is a climate change disaster. But right now, the NSW government are starting the process of doing that right on the edge of a World Heritage Area.

After successfully kicking Santos and Equinor out of the Great Australian Bight, we know the best time to stop a project like this is before it starts. Add your name today.

To dig up and burn coal right now is a climate change disaster. To mine that coal from right next to a World Heritage Area makes it a double disaster. Right now, the NSW government are starting the process to do just that. Add your name to stop the proposed Wollemi coal field before it begins.

Dear NSW government,
