Let’s end extinction for good

The Australian Senate has launched an inquiry to find out why Australia is a world leader in extinction. The Inquiry is particularly looking at:

  • Whether Australia’s laws are working to protect our animals and their habitat,

  • How effective other protections like national parks and Indigenous Protected Areas are and

  • Whether enough money and resources is going into recovery efforts.

This is an opportunity to take a stand against extinction.

Here’s some information to get you started (use your own words for the most impact!):

  • With world-class scientists and expertise, Australia should be a world leader in conservation. The majority of Australians support strong protections for our unique wildlife.

  • Three unique Australian animals have gone extinct in the last 10 years. A recent study found that unless management improves Australia stands to lose another 10 birds and seven mammals by 2038.

  • Commonwealth environmental laws are simply not up to the task of preventing the decline and extinction of Australia’s threatened species.

  • There is little evidence that current laws are stopping the decline of Australia’s threatened species or ending the threats that are causing that decline.

  • National leadership, collaboration and laws that end extinction are required to address threats to animals and their habitat.

  • I call on the Australian Government to:

    • Commit to ending extinction of Australia’s unique wildlife.

    • Overhaul our national environment laws to end threats to our animals and create strong, independent institutions enforce the laws and publicly report on efforts to end extinction.
