Don't fence them in

The WA Government is reviewing a program of extensions—660km clearing 816ha—to the State Barrier Fence, once known as the Rabbit Proof Fence.  This program will lead to significant impacts on wildlife, including the deaths of tens of thousands of emus on their seasonal migrations.

The WA Government is reviewing a program of extensions—660km clearing 816ha—to the State Barrier Fence, once known as the Rabbit Proof Fence.  This program will lead to significant impacts on wildlife, including the deaths of tens of thousands of emus on their seasonal migrations.

The program of State Barrier Fence extensions should not continue—it is cruel, unscientific and uneconomic. A clear example of this is the critically endangered Western Ground Parrot which is known to fly low to the ground—in fact at the same height as the barrier fence. This poses a major obstacle for this bird, limiting movement and expected high fatal collision rates. With about 150 birds left in the wild, the barrier will now affect a few niche habitats which the Western Ground Parrot calls home. This could prove to be the final nail in the coffin of this endemic Western Australian bird.

The project must not be approved. The Minister is making his decision on the State Barrier Fence in the coming weeks, can you email him to let him know that a fence isn’t the answer?
